Rain Harvesting

What is the Rain Harvesting?

Active and passive rainwater harvesting are two complementary approaches to capturing and using the limited precipitation we receive annually in Taos. Active systems involve directing rainwater from rooftops into storage containers like barrels or cisterns using gutters and piping. This stored water can then be used later for landscape irrigation, reducing demand on wells and municipal supplies. Passive harvesting, on the other hand, focuses on shaping the land, using features like swales, berms, and basins, to slow, spread, and soak rainwater directly into the soil, supporting plant growth and groundwater recharge without the need for storage tanks.

In high-desert environments like Taos, where water is scarce and drought conditions are common, both methods play an important role in long-term water conservation. By capturing rain when it does fall, these practices help reduce erosion, improve soil health, and make landscapes more resilient to dry periods. Incorporating active and passive rainwater harvesting not only conserves a precious resource, but also supports a more self-reliant and climate-adapted community.

Rain Barrel Cost Share Program

At this time, cost-sharing is available only to residents of Taos County outside the Town of Taos jurisdiction. However, this may change in the future. If you are located within Town limits and are interested in participating, please email Elisa Hardy for more information. A copy of your most recent property tax bill is required at the time of submission.

Eligible residents of Taos County may purchase up to two 60-gallon rain barrels per household at a cost of $50 each. With each barrel retailing at $100, the Taos SWCD cost-share program covers 50% of the total price for qualifying participants.

The rain barrels are recycled, food grade plastic and have only been used for food. They are terracotta colored and come prefabricated with a screw top lid with a screen and a brass spigot.

This program has limited funding and only available while supplies last. Barrels are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participation in this program is limited to one-time enrollment per household. Barrels are not to be resold for individual profit.
