Management of privately owned rangelands within Taos County continues to be a District priority. The restoration of native grasses as well as other types of vegetation aids ranchers with their livestock operations as well as providing much needed forage for wildlife. Additionally, the deterioration of this resource by the encroachment of Sagebrush and Pinion/Juniper species is a major concern to local conservationists and land managers.
Rangeland Improvement Program
The Range Improvement Program provides technical assistance and cost-share funding for projects that improve non-irrigated rangeland within Taos County. The program promotes sustainable rangeland management while supporting local landowners in protecting soil, water, and forage resources.
The program supports actively grazed agricultural lands on qualifying parcels of 40 acres or more with intact boundary fencing.
Projects are evaluated through an application, site visit, and Board review process based on resource benefits, feasibility, and available funding. Approved projects may receive up to $4,500 per project, generally cost-shared up to 85% District.
